Inver Hills named Military Friendly School

Inver Hills Community College has been named by G.I. Jobs Magazine as a Military Friendly School for 2010.  Inver Hills Community College ranks in the top 15% of all college, universities and trade schools nationwide. Rankings are based on military and veteran friendly college policies and efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students.

"With the expanded benefits offered by The Post 9/11 GI Bill (known as chapter 33), veterans or their spouse or eligible dependents can take advantage of a full tuition benefit plus living expenses. Inver Hills is honored to serve those who have so honorably served our country. We are so proud to have our work with veterans recognized by G.I. Jobs Magazine," says Inver Hills Community College President Cheryl Frank.

"Inver Hills takes pride in serving our students who have made ultimate sacrifices for our country.  For the past twenty five years the college has worked to promote strong relationships with our veterans to assure their success at Inver Hills. The Veteran Services Office at Inver Hills Community College is unique in that it provides many services in one place where veterans can receive guidance from the beginning of their academic career through graduation. On behalf of the staff, faculty and administrators we are honored to be one of the top 15% schools across the nation," says Sue Flannigan, Veterans Coordinator.

Inver Hills is a SOC member (Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges), which is a consortium of national higher education associations and over 1800 institutional members.  SOC helps meet the voluntary higher education needs of service members. SOC members are military friendly based on the services given to veterans such as flexibility of programs and procedures, along with credit transfer.

Inver Hills works with the Higher Education Veterans Program through the Department of Veteran Affairs to accommodate students needs with resources.  Inver Hills has a veterans' lounge which provides a means of communication, fellowship, and support for Inver Hills veterans, military members and their families.  The Veteran Services Office, along with many other staff, faculty and administrators at Inver Hills strive to give student veterans the best possible service and education as a way of showing support.

Other services include the following:

Troop support network information
Support is given to students who are veterans, military service members and their families by the college as far as working with instructors regarding deployments/training.  The college has participated in events such as Toys for Tots and sponsored events on campus such as Veterans Day and workshops.  The veterans lounge is a support system for all students who have or are serving in the military.  Networking is a big part of this type of support among the students.

Estimating/calculating Veteran benefits
The Veterans Services office assists students with figuring out the type and size of benefit they receive.  This office explains the different types of benefits that they are eligible for based on their military status.

Employment/unemployment assistance
This is a referral service to the Workforce Center and the Veterans County Service Office.  Brochures and contact information is available in the Veteran Services Office.

Medical/dental health information
This office guides them in the right direction to receive their TRI-CARE or VA medical benefits.  IHCC also works with the Higher Education Veterans Program through the Department of Veteran Affairs to accommodate students needs.

Credit for military education and experience
Credit can be granted based on the students' military training for their degree program.
