About Inver Hills

Inver Hills at a glance

Founded in 1970, Inver Hills is a comprehensive community college offering 20 degree options including the Associate in Arts (A.A.), a liberal education degree that leads to transfer to four-year colleges; the new Associate in Fine Art (A.F.A.) degree in studio arts; and the career-related Associate in Science (A.S.) and Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in leading occupational areas such as nursing, paralegal, computer networking, law enforcement, human services, business, emergency health care, and more.

The 90-acre campus includes nine modern buildings that fit naturally into the surrounding wooded hills and wetlands.

A Wilder Research survey by economist Paul Anton indicated that Inver Hills adds $95,244,208 a year to the local economy. This results in an estimated 1,254 jobs for the region.

Inititatives recognized for innovation and excellence

Number 1 with adult learners: Noel-Levitz, a premier college research and consulting company, surveyed students around the country at 26 member colleges of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning that were seeking designation as Adult-Learner Focused Institutions. The Inver Hills ASAP adult accelerated program was ranked number one in four of eight critical areas of student satisfaction including career planning, technology, and assessment of credit for prior learning. Inver Hills was the only two year college in the group.

Access and Opportunity Center of Excellence: As a part of a 1.2 million MnSCU Access and Opportunity grant, Inver Hills is continuing to increase college awareness and readiness for junior high and senior high students in the East Metro area. An intensive "in-reach" effort is underway with nine schools that provides college exploration courses for 8th and 9th graders ("R U Ready") followed by college-credit courses for 11th graders and new graduates through "PACE" and the "Summer Bridge" programs. The program is directed at underrepresented populations that are less likely to go to college including low-income, first-generation, and students of color.

Strategic Information Technology and Security Center of Excellence: The rapidly evolving capability of information and communication technology requires an equally rapid evolution of knowledge and skills. The Center for Strategic Information Technology and Security collaborates with businesses and other organizations to create and deliver information technology expertise for business success and offers resources for student networking, internships and career enhancement. Institutional partners include Metropolitan State University (lead institution), Inver Hills Community College and Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

Cisco: In order to meet the demand for Computer Technology workers with computer schools, Inver Hills Community College started a new program offering Advanced Computer Technology classes after school for high school students. The classes are offered at four locations within a ten-minute drive from their high school. Course work transfers into the two-year college degree at Inver Hills Community College. In addition, Inver Hills hosted a Best Buy Geek Squad Summer Academy. Each year, the Geek Squad conducts about a dozen academies across the country. At Inver Hills, June 10-12 was set aside for middle school students and June 17-19 for high school students. The teenagers explored technology through engaging classes and activities such as computer assembly, web technology, multimedia, green technology, Nintendo Wii, and geocaching.

Center for Professional and Workforce Development

The Center provides professional continuing education and contract training in several areas to individuals and to businesses and organizations throughout the Twin Cities including Wells Fargo, Goodrich Sensors, Thomson Reuters, Cargill, and Northwest Airlines. Technology and computer-related certifications include Cisco Certified Network Associate, Cisco Certified Network Professional, Microsoft Certified Systems Associate, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
