China Studies Certificate

(9-25 credits)


Purpose: This program is designed to prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree or to pursue employment. Thus each course is designed to be structured around a particular focus in China studies which will be offered throughout an academic year. Students may complete language courses in Chinese, if desired, while also completing courses that will focus on Chinese commerce, law, social and business cultures. The program is designed to provide a focused understanding of China from a variety of perspectives including philosophical, historical, sociological, economic, political, and business. It is designed to help students prepare for the realities of living and working in a diverse Chinese culture that is increasingly inter-connected with the people and countries of the world.


Program Information/Outcomes: Graduates will be able to do the following in a focused topic area of study:
1. Describe and analyze political, economic, business and cultural elements which influence relations of states and societies in their historical and contemporary dimensions in a focused topic area.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of cultural, social, economic, business, religious and linguistic differences.
3. Analyze specific international problems, illustrating the cultural, economic, and political differences that affect their solution.
4. Understand the role of a world citizen and the responsibility world citizens share for their common global future.
5. Evaluate the impact of globalization on varying political, economic, and societal situations.
6. Communicate effectively in the context of a diverse and rapidly changing culture.
7. Demonstrate effective speaking, writing, reading and critical thinking.
8. Promote understanding and integration of cultural differences in society and the world.
9. Appreciate and value commonalities and differences among human beings and acquire expanded, broadened world views.


China Studies Certificate Curriculum (9-25 credits)

Complete at least three core courses below:
GS 2201 Culture of International Commerce in China, 3cr
GS 2202 International Society and Law in China, 3cr
GS 2203 Doing International Business in China, 3cr
GS 2204 International Relations and Trade in China, 3cr
GS 2250 Selected Topics in China Studies (topics such as Chinese business ethics), 3cr
Electives
Students may complete any of the following:

CHIN 1101 or 1102 or 2201 or 2202, 5-10cr
Any course listed in Goal 8 Global Perspectives of MnTC, 3-5cr
