A.S., Emergency Health Services - Traditional Track (Paramedic)

(64 credits)

Purpose: Designed to offer quality education and occupational preparation in the field of advanced pre-hospital emergency care. Paramedics are primarily employed by advanced life support ambulance services and provide care in a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies. Graduates are awarded an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree and are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic written and practical exam.

Program Information: Two unique curricular tracks are offered both leading to an Associate in Science degree in Emergency Health Services; a third option is offered for those seeking a career as a paramedic but not seeking a degree. The Associate in Science degree in Emergency Health Services offered by Inver Hills Community College is one of only two Associate in Science degree programs for paramedics offered in Minnesota. The A.S. in Emergency Health Services requires completion of four semesters of paramedic core and liberal arts curriculum. Clinical learning experiences are provided with ambulance services and hospitals throughout the Metropolitan area.

Admission Process: Admission to the Paramedic Core Program requires special application and completion of all admission requirements. Once accepted, students are required to submit the Health Immunization Record and to complete and pass a criminal background study required by the State of Minnesota. Clearance must be obtained to participate in the Paramedic Core Program. A brochure outlining admission requirements and procedures in addition to a suggested sequence of courses is available from Enrollment Services or online at www.inverhills.edu. Students are advised to consult with a counselor to plan pre-entry and initial course work.

General requirements for the EHS degree

The A.S. Traditional Track is intended for students seeking the Associate in Science degree and paramedic certification. It consists of a group of required general education courses and a group of required career/technical courses, which includes a paramedic core curriculum. Successful completion of this paramedic core results in eligibility to seek certification as a paramedic. Students are admitted to the college and complete general education requirements and basic Emergency Health Services (EHS) courses before applying for formal admission into the paramedic core. Among the general education requirements for the A.S. Degree, Anatomy and Physiology I is an admission requirement for the formal paramedic core. Successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology II is required prior to the beginning of the first semester of the paramedic core. Admission requirements exist for students seeking admission to the formal paramedic core; see the EHS Program brochure for details on admission requirements and procedures.
