Purpose: The Nursing Program is designed to meet the following goals:

  1. To prepare associate degree nurses who are capable of administering safe, patient-centered, holistic care in beginning level positions in nursing practice.
  2. To prepare graduates who are qualified to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).
  3. To provide opportunity for nursing students to recognize their commitment to personal and professional development.
  4. To facilitate career mobility of LPNs and Paramedics toward the Associate Degree in Nursing.
  5. To maintain an innovative nursing curriculum.
  6. To promote and prepare students for continued formal professional nursing education.
  7. To prepare graduates who are culturally competent.

Program Information: The Nursing Program is jointly operated through a unique, cooperative arrangement between Inver Hills Community College and Century College. The program and curriculum are identical on each campus with the nursing faculty teaching on both campuses. Clinical learning experiences are provided at hospitals and community health care facilities within St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs. Three unique nursing curricular tracks are offered, leading to the Associate in Science Degree (A.D.) in Nursing.

The Traditional Track requires completion of the entire four semester nursing course sequence and liberal arts requirements.

The LPN Mobility and Paramedic Mobility are offered to licensed practical nurses or qualified paramedics, and requires completion of a two and one-half semester nursing course sequence and completion of the liberal arts requirements. Completion time is determined by the number of liberal arts requirements met before entering the program and generally ranges from two to four semesters.

The Nursing Program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing. (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 350 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014; 212-989-9393, ext 153)

Mission: The Inver Hills – Century College A.D. Nursing Program is committed to continuously improving student understanding and capabilities that help students become critical thinkers, culturally competent, holistic caregivers, teachers, advocates, interdisciplinary collaborators, leaders/managers and lifelong learners in a variety of community settings. The Inver Hills – Century A.D. Nursing Program values and supports diversity and is committed to the recruitment and retention of diverse students.

Educational Mobility: Graduates of the Inver Hills – Century Nursing Program satisfy many of the lower-division, liberal arts requirements needed to earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Students planning to enter baccalaureate nursing programs following completion of the A.D. in Nursing are advised to see a counselor for specific transfer advice. The Inver Hills – Century Nursing Program has a statewide articulation agreement with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) where there is a seamless transfer of credits to any college within the system toward a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

Admission Process: Admission to the Nursing Program requires special application. There is a selection process for acceptance into this highly competitive program, where points are assigned based on patient care experience, cumulative GPA, successful completion of 20 credits of the required Liberal Arts courses, and other items. It is recommended that students complete 20 of the 30 required Liberal Arts courses and maintain a high GPA in order to be considered for acceptance.

Once accepted, students are required to submit the Health Immunization Record and to complete and pass a criminal background study required by the State of Minnesota. Background clearance must be obtained to participate in the Nursing Program. A current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card is also required to be maintained throughout the Nursing Program.

A detailed brochure outlining program information, admission requirements and application procedures is available from the Enrollment Center or online at www.inverhills.edu. Students are advised to consult with a counselor in planning pre-entry and first semester course work.
