ENGR 1000 Orientation to Engineering

Provides information on what engineers do, aptitudes and skills engineers need, the Inver Hills engineering courses, and programs at transfer institutions. Course includes vocational interest assessment and introduction to basic engineering skills, such as calculator usage, measurement and error analysis, and problem-solving methods. Students will be exposed to working in groups for solving problems. There will be a project involving engineering design methods. Recommended for any student considering engineering.

ENGR 1060 Introduction to Digital Circuits and Logic Design

Studies binary systems, logic gates, Boolean algebra and functions, design of combinational and sequential logic circuits, adders, decoders, multiplexers, comparator counters, registers and memories. Prereq: A math course numbered above 1000 and a course in one of the following: computer science, electronics, or physics.

ENGR 1100 Introduction To Engineering I

Introduces students to the profession of engineering, engineering specialties, and engineering theories. Topics include visualization and graphics, teamwork, mechanical dissection, project management, and engineering design. Prereq: MATH 0099 or placement into higher level MATH.

ENGR 1101 Introduction To Engineering II

Provides exposure to software products commonly employed in engineering. Topics include basic electrical laws and concepts. A robot project, involving teamwork, project management skills, and documentation, will be required. Prereq: ENGR 1100 and MATH 1119 or 1127.

ENGR 1200 Engineering Graphics

Introduces students to engineering representation and analysis of systems of projection, the coordinate system, graphical solution of space problems, intersections, and developments are included in this course. Also covers freehand graphics and introduction to simplified graphics techniques as applied to the design process, with special emphasis on problem-solving techniques and visual communication. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) will be introduced in the latter weeks of the course.

ENGR 2000 Thermodynamics

Provides a foundation for analyzing mechanics of heat using a macroscopic approach. Topics include: continuum hypothesis, properties, equations of state, thermodynamic processes, modes of work and heat transfer, equations for conservation of mass, equations for conservation of energy, equations for conservation of entropy, basic thermodynamic cycles, thermodynamic systems, thermodynamics of ideal gas mixtures, and adiabatic flame temperature. Prereq: CHEM 1061, MATH 1133.

Studies resultants of force systems, equilibrium, analysis of forces acting on structural and machine elements, and friction, second moments. Prereq: PHYS 1081 and MATH 1134.

ENGR 2024 Mechanics of Materials

Provides the foundation necessary for design of machine elements and structures. Topics include: Stress, strain, linear elasticity and Hooke's law, shear force, bending moment, stresses and deflection of beams, statically indeterminate beams, axially loaded members and shafts, buckling of columns, torsion of circular shafts, analysis of stress and strain, and Mohr's circle. Prereq: ENGR 2020.

Studies kinematics of particles, systems of particles and rigid bodies. Studies kinetics of plane motion, work-energy, linear and angular impulse-momentum principles, vibrations. Prereq: ENGR 2020, MATH 1134.

ENGR 2041 Linear Circuits I

Explores Kirchhoff's Laws, mesh and nodal analysis, source transformation and superposition. Also studies Thevenin and Norton equivalents, natural and step responses of RL, RC, and RLC circuits, and sinusoidal steady state analysis. Introduces operational amplifier circuits. Prereq: MATH 2222 or concurrent enrollment in PHYS 1082.

ENGR 2042 Linear Circuits II

Studies circuit analysis using phasors, single phase and three phase. AC power, delta and wye connected three phase circuits, transformers and magnetic coupling, series and parallel resonance, complex power and frequency, and two port networks such as transistors. Prereq: ENGR 2041.
