About EAP courses

Courses are open to students identified during assessment/application as needing additional English reading/writing/speaking skills for college success. Course Descriptions


EAP 0090  Introduction to College Reading and Writing

5 cr

Introduces the beginning college student to the demands of college reading and writing through the close study of representative college textbook material and the production of short essays and other informal writing. Includes a study of English grammar troublespots. Intended for non-native speakers whose college assessment results suggest that further development of English reading and writing skills are necessary before attempting college-level English courses. Prerequisites: Placement as recommended by college assessment. Student must register for this course at the enrollment services counter.


EAP 0091  Grammar Essentials for Non-native Speakers of English

1 cr

Helps non-native speakers of English gain a better awareness of the grammar "trouble spots" that cause difficulties in writing assignments. Helps students improve their ability to evaluate and edit their own writing in terms of grammatical accuracy by providing instruction tailored to students' needs. Designed for non-native speakers who are concurrently enrolled in ENG 0096, ENG 0099, ENG 1108, and/or other courses requiring significant writing. Prereq: Concurrent enrollment in any course requiring writing recommended


EAP 0094  Reading Workshop

3 cr

Challenges students to improve general and college reading skills through development of fluency and vocabulary. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing a college-level vocabulary, improving reading rate, expanding background knowledge for college reading, and the role of reading in academic, public, and private life. Intended for the student whose basic reading skills are satisfactory, but whose vocabulary, reading experience, and reading rate may affect the ability to cope with the more rigorous demands of college reading assignments. Prerequisites: Placement recommended by college assessments.


EAP 0096  Basic Writing

3 cr

Provides non-native English speakers with a general understanding of the expectations of college writing through instruction in English grammar and basic composition principles. Students learn to follow a writing process to improve the content and organization of paragraphs and short essays. Students improve their understanding of English grammatical and mechanical rules. They also begin to use outside sources in their writing. Intended for high- intermediate non-native speakers of English. Prerequisite: Placement as recommended by college assessments.


EAP 0099  English Essentials

3 cr

Provides advanced writing students whose native language is not English with the ability to improve their writing skills in order to be successful in entry-level college writing courses. Students develop their understanding of and use of various aspects of grammar, style, and essay organization. They write short essays and move toward argumentative or expository essays which incorporate research from outside sources. Prereq: Placement as recommended by college assessments or one of the following: EAP 0090, EAP 0096, READ 0090, ENG 0096.


EAP 1101  Grammar for Tutors of Non-native Speakers of English

1 cr

Helps student tutors gain a better awareness of the grammar "trouble spots" that cause non-native speakers difficulties in writing assignments. Provides student tutors with the general principles of English grammar and helps student tutors to competently address non-native writers' errors in conferences in the Writing Center. Also provides student tutors with greater awareness of non-native student populations on campus and issues that affect their writing and/or academic success. Intended for student tutors who are working with non-native speakers in the Writing Center. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor.
