GS 2201 Topics: Culture of International Commerce

Examines historical, social, and ethical foundations of commerce in different cultures of the world. Explores wide range of issues: trends and patterns in evolving attitudes towards commerce that can be used to further understanding of present-day business realities; themes and patterns that dictate interaction among a people; and major philosophical, political, religious, and linguistic differences that might engender conflict. One major goal of course is to develop a protocol for everyday interaction that will 1) contribute to establishment of successful interaction between peoples, 2) mitigate cross-cultural conflict, and 3) enhance possibilities of success in international world of business. Course may be repeated as topic varies.

GS 2202 Topics: International Society & Law

Surveys dominant legal themes and their development in different cultural areas of the world. Course begins with study of legal traditions and core assumptions underlying role of law in target culture. Followed by comparative analysis of respective legal conventions and beliefs. Attendant opportunity also given to look at target culture's place in the world, to question general assumptions of one's own culture, and to predict legal actions and outcomes across cultures. Course focuses on selected topics, including: individual's relationship to state; role of judiciary and lawyers; criminal-law process; family law; property rights; freedom of speech, press, and religion; human rights; and status of women. Course may be repeated as topic varies.

GS 2203 Topics: Doing International Business

Examines basic business and commercial law with focus on practical aspects of doing business in different cultures. Primary emphasis is on useful understanding of business know-how and behavior. This is achieved by first laying historical foundation of target culture, then introducing students to substantive areas of law and documents that commonly feature in transnational transactions. Torts, contracts, property rights, technology licensing and intellectual property are examined and students are walked through hypotheticals and the typical phases of different kinds of agreements. Secondary aim of course is to educate students on how to identify and find primary source law and how to formulate "next-step" strategies required to close a commercial transaction. Course may be repeated as topic varies.

GS 2204 Topics: International Relations & Trade

Examines issues surrounding bilateral trade between the United States and target country (or trade group) within the framework of mutual obligations and treaties. Begins with a brief history of relevant bilateral trade relationship. Then moves to a review of obligations and commitments of parties under pertinent laws and regulations affecting international trade, including the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994, World Trade Organization agreements, and other bi-lateral pacts. Role of cultural differences in trade disputes as well as monitoring and enforcement actions that can aid in resolving them are also discussed. Course may be repeated as topic varies.

Examines a variety of areas in global studies, with curriculum tailored to meet the needs of companies, organizations, or individuals enrolling in course. Topics that can be covered span language, culture, economics, foreign relations, law, commerce, investment, corporate relations, business ethics, and cross-cultural conflict. Some specific objectives include mitigating cross-cultural conflict and fashioning everyday protocols for interacting in different cultures.
