About Learning Communities

You are encouraged to get involved with a new initiative offered at Inver Hills Community College called, “Learning Communities.” A learning community is an innovative strategy of linking two or more courses together around a certain theme or discipline (e.g., Pre-Health Sciences, Business, or Mass Media and Culture). Students enroll in the community (usually 6-9 credits) as a “package” and stay in the group with other students for the entire semester. Most learning communities last one semester in length, typically in the fall or spring term. The purpose of the learning community is to help students become more engaged with their learning and meet their academic requirements for graduation at Inver Hills Community College. Inver Hills Community College intends to offer several learning community options each semester.

Courses in the Learning Community have been chosen to increase student success in their first year of college. Students benefit from increased interaction with each other and their instructors. Student reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills are improved by the coordination of assignments and class activities among the instructors.
