NURS 1001 Nursing Assistant

This course prepares one for employment in nursing homes, hospitals, and home care. Personal care skills and content will be taught in the classroom and nursing lab. Includes caring for residents in a long-term care facility. Upon completion, the student will be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide examination for placement on the Minnesota Department of Health Registry. Meets IHCC nursing program NA-R admission requirement.

NURS 1020 The Registered Nurse Role in Health And Wellness

Introduces the role of the Associate Degree Nurse in healthcare. Concepts include holistic therapies, cultural diversity, nursing process, assessment, pharmacology, communication, teaching-learning theory, documentation, legal-ethical issues and professional boundaries. Emphasizes holism, critical thinking and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention with patients and families throughout the lifespan. Fundamental concepts of therapeutic nursing interventions and the relationship to health and wellness are integrated through out the course. Prepares the Associate Degree Nursing Student to care for patients in chronic and acute care settings Prerequisites: Admission to the Nursing Program, concurrent enrollment in NURS 1025, INTS 1080, and BIOL 2201 unless previously successfully completed. NURS 1025 Clinical Application for Nurs 1020

Applies theoretical concepts to nursing practice in individual, small group and large group settings. Therapeutic nursing interventions include medication administration, physical assessment, sterile technique, catheterization, wound care, enteral tubes, and intravenous fluid administration. Practicum experiences include contact with patients across the lifespan in a variety of settings such as nursing lab, long term care, acute care, ambulatory clinics and the community. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in NURS 1020, Nursing Assistant-Registered Course or equivalent, Healthcare Provider CPR certification, and background clearance. Computer skills recommended.

Holism, nursing process with emphasis on assessment and interventions, prioritization, communication, and health teaching in both acute care and community service learning are emphasized. Prereq: Concurrent enrollment in NURS 1030, background clearance, current healthcare provider CPR certification and required immunizations.

The course focuses on the pathophysiology of major health problems that lead to mortality and morbidity. This course connects the interrelationship between pathophysiology and pharmacology, emphasizing the importance of pharmacology to these major health problems. This knowledge is applied to the planning of holistic nursing care and pharmacologic interventions of patients with these health problems. This basic acupressure course is rooted in theoretical principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Students will be introduced to traditional Chinese concepts of physiology, pathology, assessment, and treatment planning in order to develop skills and judgement about the appropriate use of acupressure. This course includes a lab component where students will learn the location and use of 50 common acupressure points, a variety of energy moving exercises, as well as basics for creating a healing environment. Intended for: nurses, massage therapists, chiropractic assistants, healthcare and human service professionals and others interested in holistic and complementary therapies. Prerequisites: One course in Anatomy and Physiology or instructor permission.
