SPAN 1100 Spanish for Health Professionals

Introduces basic Spanish skills for professionals in the health fields. This course will emphasize practical oral communication and will introduce the students to the specialized medical terminology in Spanish. Acquisition of this knowledge will help professionals to communicate using practical basic sentences with patients and family whose primary language in Spanish, when accessibility to an interpreter is not possible. Knowledge of medical terminology is recommended.

SPAN 1101 Beginning Spanish I

Introduces basic language skills. Development of listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing skills to become proficient at the appropriate level. Cultures of the Spanish speaking countries are introduced to develop cultural understanding and sensitivity.

SPAN 1102 Beginning Spanish II

Is a continuation of SPAN 1101. This courses focuses on continued development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. Cultural understanding and sensitivity are important aspects of this language course. Prereq: SPAN 1101 or equivalent.

SPAN 1103 Spanish for Educators

Provides functional Spanish language communication skills for educators and other personnel who may have professional contact with Spanish speakers. Offers training in basic Spanish listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in school settings where an interpreter might not be available. Conduct work-specific learning activities dedicated to the school office, nurse's office, classroom and instructional management, extracurricular activities, transportation, and school security. NOTE: EDU 1103 and SPAN 1103 are co-listed; department should be selected at registration. Credit will be given in only one department.

SPAN 2101 Conversational Spanish I

Presents a variety of practical speaking situations intended for intermediate level students. The topics will include, daily activities, travel, some business situations, and some cultural issues. Prereq: SPAN 1102.

SPAN 2201 Intermediate Spanish I

Presents a comprehensive review and continued development and strengthening of the four communication skills (reading, writing listening and speaking) with special emphasis on communicating ideas in conversation and in writing. Cultural and literary materials will acquaint students with arts, literature, history and cultures of the Spanish speaking peoples. Discussion of current events, oral and written reports, role play and films. Prereq: SPAN 1102 or equivalent.

SPAN 2202 Intermediate Spanish II

Is a continuation of SPAN 2201. Renewed emphasis is placed on communicating ideas in conversation and composition. Historical and contemporary issues facing the speaker of the language are studied. Cultural and literary materials will develop an appreciation for the customs, the arts, history, culture and the literature of the Spanish speaking peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social and linguistic differences. Prereq: SPAN 2201 or equivalent.
