Inver Hills Community College is a place for you

 Enrollment

Admission policy

Inver Hills Community College considers all applicants for admission regardless of age, race, sex, color, religion or national origin. The college follows an open door admission policy, which means that any person who has graduated from an accredited high school or who has successfully completed a General Educational Development (GED) examination is eligible for admission.

Although not required for admission, students who have taken the ACT or SAT assessment exam should forward their scores to Enrollment Services.

Admission to the college does not automatically qualify a student for all college-level courses. Some of the course offerings in both career and transfer programs have special prerequisites and requirements.

There are separate admissions requirements for international students, Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO), and non-PSEO for students currently attending high school. The Director of Enrollment Services determines eligibility for these programs as well as general admission to the college.

Emergency Health Services (EHS), Registered Nursing (RN), Network Technology and Security (CNT courses) and Urban Teacher Program (UTP) also have specific admissions processes and requirements. Admission to these career programs is determined by the corresponding program director.

Students on academic suspension from a Minnesota State College or University shall not be admitted to Inver Hills Community College during the term of that suspension unless they demonstrate potential for being successful at the college. Students who have been suspended or expelled for disciplinary reasons from any postsecondary institution may be denied admission to the college. Students suspended from other institutions for academic or disciplinary reasons will not be admitted unless their petition to the Registrar is approved.

Applicants who are denied admission can appeal that decision to the appropriate Dean or Vice President. The decision of the Dean or Vice President is final.

Inver Hills Community College has taken steps to assure that lack of English skills will not pose a barrier to participating in the application, admissions, and enrollment process.  These include provisions for communicating with enrollment center and counseling personnel, a well-defined information and referral process, and the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.

Admission procedures

Inver Hills has two different admission and registration procedures: Regular Admission and Limited Enrollment. All new students are encouraged to follow the regular admission and registration option. However, the procedure students choose to follow is based on their purpose for enrolling. Limited Enrollment is a registration option for those who want to take just a few courses and are not seeking a degree or financial aid. See page 13 for information.

Regular admission

This is required for students who intend to complete more than eight credits each semester and is designed for degree-seeking, eventual transfer, or undecided students. After students complete admission steps one through four (below), they will be invited to a new student orientation. Orientation is mandatory for all students selecting this option. Students who attend orientation benefit by receiving assistance from a counselor with the registration process, learning important Inver Hills policies and procedures, and familiarizing themselves with the campus and available student services.

Application steps

  1. Complete and submit the online application for admission along with a one-time $20 application fee. A paper application is available on request only.
  2. Student who have graduated from high school within the last five years should request that official high school transcripts be sent directly to the Inver Hills Enrollment Center (G.E.D. recipients should submit a copy of the certificate). Students coming from high schools that participate in Docufide (electronic transcript delivery), can have transcripts delivered to Inver Hills electronically. If the student's high school does not participate in Docufide, transcripts will have to be delivered in paper form. High school transcripts are not required for students who graduated from high school or received a G.E.D. more than five years ago.
  3. Complete the Inver Hills assessment inventory in reading, English, and mathematics (after receiving confirmation that Inver Hills has processed the student's application).
  4. When applying for admission to Inver Hills, official transcripts of previous college work are required if the student (1) is applying for financial aid or veterans benefits or (2) wants to have credits evaluated for transfer to Inver Hills or for course equivalencies. Students with college math or English composition completed have the option of submitting transcripts instead of taking assessment tests (see the application form). Official transcripts must be submitted to the Enrollment Center in sealed envelopes from all institutions attended. Although transcripts are not required for Regular Admission, students are strongly encouraged to submit them for academic advising purposes.
  5. Attend a new student orientation/registration session. An online orientation option is available for those who qualify.

Application fee waiver:
Under certain conditions students may be eligible for a $20.00 application fee waiver.  The President or designee may waive the application fee if the student meets one of the following conditions:

  1. Ward of the state
  2. Financial hardship
  3. Active military deployment oversees
  4. PSEO program (must be admitted to PSEO program; no petition required)
  5. Special recruitment initiatives

To receive an application fee waiver, the student must provide documentation demonstrating one of the above conditions.

Assessment
Students who plan to enroll in an English or math course must demonstrate that that they have met the required prerequisites for these courses as specified by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities policy. Students will not be allowed to register for English and math classes without meeting these prerequisites. Students can meet course prerequisites in one of the following ways:

4. Complete approved English and math prerequisites at another college  with grades of "C" or higher. A transcript with the prerequisites must be on file at Inver Hills, and the college must approve these courses in order for them to satisfy prerequisite requirements. Transcripts with prerequisite courses should be mailed to the address shown below for "Prerequisite Transcripts."

Students who do not meet any of the above criteria, desire to take the  Inver Hills assessments, or have other questions, please call 651-450-3687. A government-issued photo I.D. is required for students taking assessments.

Inver Hills uses a computerized assessment inventory (Accuplacer) developed by the College Board to provide information about students' skills in reading, writing and mathematics. New and returning students are responsible for completing the assessment prior to registration. All items on the assessments are multiple choice, and the assessment takes approximately one and one-half hours to complete. No appointment is necessary and no fees are charged. Assessment results are considered valid for initial placement for a period of three years. Students with disabilities may contact the Director of Disability Services to discuss their need for accommodations while taking the assessments.

Students who place into Reading 0090/English for Academic Purposes 0090 must take either READ0090 or EAP 0090 during their first semester at Inver Hills. A hold will be placed on the student's record until this course is completed successfully.

Students applying to the PSEO program may take the assessment two (2) times for each admission deadline (July 1 and December 1).  All other students may take the assessment a total of two (2) times regardless of admission date.  Exceptions may be granted by petition.

Orientation
Orientation is required for all students applying to the college. Students will receive information about orientation/registration via postal mail once they are admitted to the college.

Inver Hills Community College offers three options for students to meet the orientation requirement:

On-campus: The on-campus orientation/registration session includes a general information session as well as small-group counseling assistance for class registration. On-campus sessions last about three hours. First-time college students should attend an on-campus orientation.

Online: Eligible students may complete an online orientation. The online orientation consists of readings and activities designed to acquaint the student with the college, its policies, and other people at the college. Within 24 hours of completing your online orientation, you will be allowed to register for courses online and on your own. Inquire with the Enrollment Center to determine if you are eligible for an online orientation.

One-Stop: The One-Stop Registration Session is designed to give the student the opportunity to complete admission, orientation and registration in the same day. One-Stop Registration Sessions will be offered intermittently. Completing any of the above can be a very effective and efficient way for students to accomplish several important tasks that all students must eventually complete. Regardless of the type of orientation chosen, students will:
