A-F Grading

A (4.00):  Denotes superior achievement

B (3.00):  Denotes above average achievement

C (2.00):  Denotes average achievement

D (1.00):  Denotes below-average achievement

F (0.0):   Denotes failure to achieve; no credit given

U: Denotes college withdrawal of student from class, initiated by the institution.

I: Denotes incomplete work

W: Denotes withdrawal from class after the last day to drop through two weeks prior to the first day of final exams or the published withdrawal deadline date. Courses with beginning and ending dates which differ from the regular semester calendar will be specified for each course.
P: Denotes achievement in a course at the level of "C" or higher. Credits with a grade of P will count toward graduation but will not be used in computing grade-point average.
NC: Denotes no credit granted.
AU: Denotes auditor status; no credit is awarded.

All developmental courses, courses numbered below 1000, will be graded on a scale of A-B-C-D-NC.

NC, I, W, P and AU are not considered in determining grade-point average.

Pass/Fail Grading:

A student may elect to take a course on a Pass/Fail (P/F) grading basis by submitting the appropriate completed form to the records office by the 10th business day after the initial start of the course for fall/spring semester and by the 5th business day after the initial start of the course for summer session. This form must be signed by the course instructor. To earn a grade of "P," the student must achieve at the level of a "C" grade or higher.

Because of the nature and intent of some programs and the restrictions of some transfer colleges, students should consult with a counselor prior to deciding on this grading option.

Some special topics courses, workshops, and seminars are offered only on a P/F basis. These will be indicated in the catalog or class schedule.

Auditing:

Students who are admitted to the college through Regular Admission or Limited Enrollment may register for a class as an auditor. Students interested in auditing a class should complete the audit registration form and register in person at the Enrollment Services counter. Audit registration is extended through the 10th business day of the semester or fifth day of the summer term. Due to the nature of some classes, instructors may choose not to allow auditors in their classes.

Students auditing a class are not required to take tests and/or examinations or to prepare written assignments. However, they are expected to conform to regular classroom rules including attendance and discussion. Auditors pay full tuition, but no credits are earned for the audited class. Students may not change to credit registration after completing the course.

Pass/No Credit Grade:

Pass/No Credit (P/NC) is designated for the Credit for Prior Learning Program and Credit by Examination. The college will determine which courses may be graded P/NC.

Incomplete Grade:

An incomplete grade may be given only at the student's request and with the instructor's approval. A student may request a grade of incomplete ("I") when coursework has been satisfactory but the student is unable to complete all course requirements before the end of the semester. The "Incomplete Grade Request Form" must be signed by both the instructor and student, and submitted to the records and registration office by the end of the course. Coursework must be completed and a grade submitted to the records and registration office by a mutually agreed-upon date, not to exceed the end of the following semester. A grade of "F" will be recorded if this deadline is not met.

Changes to grades

If you have questions about your grade for a course, consult your instructor. The original grade (other than an incomplete) will remain on the student record unless a "Change of Grade Form" is submitted to the records office by the instructor. Grade changes, other than those precipitated by technical recording errors, will not be considered more than six weeks after the scheduled completion date of the course.

Grade appeal policy

Students have the right to ask their instructors for an explanation for any grade received. Students may submit a formal grade appeal when they believe that a final grade is unfair, arbitrary, or capricious. However, the student bears the burden of proving that there are sufficient grounds for changing a grade. Copies of the college's grade appeal process are available from the receptionist in Liberal Arts Bldg 214 and at the Counseling Center.

Grade-point average (g.p.a.)

A student's g.p.a. is the quotient of the student's total number of grade points divided by the total number of credits attempted. Four grade points are awarded for each credit with an "A" grade; three grade points for each credit with a "B" grade: two grade points for each credit of "C"; one grade point for each credit of "D"; and no points for F. Example

ENG 1108

4 credits

Grade of A

=

16 grade points

ART 1141

3 credits

Grade of B

=

  9 grade points

BIOL 1120

4 credits

Grade of C

=

  8 grade points

BUS 1104

3 credits

Grade of B

=

  9 grade points

Total of grade points earned = 42
Divided by credits attempted = 14
Grade-point average = 3.00

Repeating courses

If you elect to repeat a course, both the original and repeated grade and credits will appear on the student record. You must inform Enrollment Services if you wish to have the repeated course and grade to be identified on the transcript. Those courses identified as repeated result in a recalculated Grade Point Average. Forms are available at Enrollment Services to alter the permanent record to include any completed or in-progress repeated courses. Students enrolled in a course for the third time (or more) may remain in the course with the agreement of the instructor.

Academic Renewal

The Academic Renewal Policy acknowledges that some students' previous coursework at Inver Hills Community College was adversely affected by difficult circumstances. The policy recognizes that, for various reasons, some students have not met the scholastic requirements of their previous educational programs. Instead of needing to enroll at another college to get a fresh start, academic renewal provides the opportunity for students to pursue their educational goals at Inver Hills. For the full policy, go to Academic Renewal Policy.

Grade reports

Grade reports are not mailed to students. You may view your grades online through the web-based registration system, which also permits you to check on your student account for invoice information, holds, and other updates to your record. You may print the grades screen if you need an informal hard copy of your grades.
