Willie McCray, an Inver Hills graduate who went through ASAP, was named the CAEL Learner of the Year. The award is presented annually by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) to one adult student nationally who has overcome multiple obstacles and successfully returned to education. An educational assistant at Cleveland Middle School in St. Paul, he manages the in-school suspension program and coaches basketball. McCray also participated in the Urban Educator Program at Inver Hills, an initiative that supported educational paraprofessionals in earning credits and associate degrees to maintain employment as required by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.
