Online Study Skills

It is a myth that online learning is easier than learning in a traditional classroom course. Many students find online courses more difficult because of the amount of reading, self-discipline, and motivation they require.

Time management is paramount. While you may not have to report to an actual classroom, you still need to block out the time to study and complete assignments. It is very easy to fall behind in an online class, so it is essential that you devote time to discussion and assignments. To prepare yourself, try to learn as much as you can about the course before the class begins. For example, read the course syllabus or practice navigating through the course website.

In addition to time management, make sure you have the computer skills necessary for your course. Otherwise, you will find yourself spending time learning those skills instead of the content of the course.

By actively participating in group discussion, you will feel more connected to the other students and will become more comfortable with the course materials.

Keep in touch with your online instructor. Without a traditional classroom setting, instructors cannot rely on non-verbal cues that can indicate you need assistance. If you experience difficulty on any level, either with the technology or with the course content, communicate your concerns with your instructor immediately.
