I'm Undecided

So you've decided to come to college, but you're not exactly sure about the best degree or career for your future? You are not alone! With so many career and major choices it's no wonder that many students aren't exactly sure about their educational goal.

"It's okay to be undecided, but not uninformed!"  -  LeAnne Schmidt, Inver Hills Counselor

Go ahead and talk to successful people who've been in their careers for a significant amount of time (5, 10 or more years). You'll probably be surprised to hear that many of them weren't exactly sure of their career direction when they began college. These individuals will probably have key themes in common; they realized that having a college degree would assist them both personally and professionally and they took active steps to make decisions. got direction?

As you begin your college experience you would benefit from actively engaging in career exploration and planning.  The classroom can be one of the best places for such investigation.  Take classes in subject areas that sound interesting to you.  Talk to your instructors about career opportunities in their field.  Enroll in a career discovery course: CRDV 1100 Life/Career Planning.  Talk to your classmates about their future plans.  Register for INTS 1000 On Course.  Participate in a learning community.  Finding your direction is an experience and a process - enjoy it!

What classes should undecided students take?

It's most common for undecided students to follow the AA degree requirements. Most college programs (both two and four year) require that you take a certain amount of general education credits. The AA degree is designed to satisfy general education credits for a four year degree making it the most versatile degree to follow. If you are leaning towards one of the two year career programs, then you may want to choose some of the classes that satisfy the liberal arts (general education) requirements for that degree. Be sure to consult with a counselor who can help you decide what the best plan is for you.

Pay particular attention to the following classes:

  • INTS 1000 On Course
It is expected that all new degree seeking students will take this class.
  • CRDV 1100 Life/Career Planning
This course is offered every semester to help you explore and decide on an educational and career path.
