Connect to Campus - First to Earn Degree

Over 40% of Inver Hills students are the first in their family who will be earning a college degree. Such students are commonly referred to as First Generation (parents have not earned a four-year degree). Be assured that you have made an excellent decision to attend college. Obviously college is about more than earning a paycheck, but you want to be sure your investment of time and money is worth it.  Research has shown that those with degrees will have higher earning potential than others without such an accomplishment. The more education an individual holds, the greater his/her lifetime earning potential. Individuals who hold a degree will be positioned for success as they are able to meet the demands of the ever changing workplace.

Learning Communities

The first few weeks for any college student may be particularly challenging so don't be afraid to admit if you are confused at any point along the way. Many of the staff and faculty were among the first in their families to attend college and they are here to help guide you on your way. It's important that you make use of the excellent resources and programs to ensure your success. One such program is the Learning Community initiative where courses are linked together. All students are eligible to participate in Learning Communities.

In a learning community a group of students take the same 2 or 3 classes. In this format the faculty work closely with one another and you truly become more connected with your classmates in a supportive environment. The numbers are in: students who participated in learning communities earned higher grades and completed the courses at higher rates. Learning communities have limited space so don't delay!

"Just do it. The best decision I made was to join a learning community."
    --Ashley, Learning Community Student
