Faculty & Staff: How To Be Involved in SSD Options Suggested by the SSD Committee* Typical
Schedule: ½-1 Hr. Sessions:
8 or 9 am-3 pm & On
SSD, require your students
to pick up something from your office or sign in with you so they know
where your office is and/or you know they were on campus. Make
appointments to meet students, one on one or in small groups, to discuss
their success. Have
students who are involved in group projects meet and write a summary of
the meeting. Encourage
students to use tutoring services: the Writing Center and the Peer
Tutoring Center. For
extra credit, have students check out different kinds of student and
counseling services. Give
students extra credit for coming up to you, shaking your hand, and
chatting a bit. If
you know your at-risk students, invite or require them individually to
meet with you. Find
or reserve an empty classroom to meet with students.
Many students are very nervous about meeting with an instructor in
his/her office. Club
advisors, encourage a meeting anytime or encourage club members to attend
the 2 p.m. workshop with the days guest speaker (a separate, smaller
event than his two speeches). Programs
and departments, offer a success-oriented presentation/panel (e.g.,
Career Options). After
SSD, ask students to write
about it or discuss it in class/small groups, ask them for ideas about
success, etc. You may want to
have them summarize, journal/reflect/react, evaluate, or discuss how their
learning on SSD can help them reach one or more individual or course
goals. ----------
