This organization works with boys and girls ages 9 to 17 who are involved in the Ramsey County system. Clients are paired with mentors who meet once a week to work on positive relationship building, role modeling, and other various areas of expressed need.

American Red Cross service learners provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Typically, students play a role in supporting Red Cross blood donors, both as greeters and as canteen hosts at Red Cross sites and at bloodmobiles across the metro area.

 

Time: One-time events include a holiday function, a fund-raiser, or a mass training event.
Short term assignments vary from a few full days to several hours a month for a few months. These might entail updating a booklet or manual, installing or programming computers, Web site work, or teaching a skill to others.

Disabilties ARC

Arc Greater Twin Cities serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. To help fund their programs, they operate several thrift stores, called Arc's Value Villages, throughout the metro area.  They have recently opened a new thrift store in St. Paul.  In addition to their Saint Paul Store, they have stores in New Hope, Brooklyn Center, and Richfield.  The volunteer opportunities at their Value Villages are unpacking, sorting & tagging clothing as well as stickering hard goods and stocking the sales floor. 


Time: Typical shifts are 2-4 hours and must be booked in advance

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS) matches young people with adult, volunteer mentors to build long-term, one-to-one relationships. Volunteer mentors provide friendship, emotional support and hope to young people.

Building Blocks Tutorial:

In collaboration with St. Paul Schools, Building Blocks Tutorial offers after-school tutoring to second and third grade students who are below grade level, in need of greater self-esteem, or who are not receiving homework support at home. Each tutor is paired with a student to meet with consistently throughout the term.

Tutoring Cherokee Heights Elementary Mentoring Program:

At Cherokee we work to nurture and challenge each student intellectually, emotionally, and physically in our Pre K - 6th grade programs. Cherokee Heights is a highly diverse elementary with 48% Hispanic, 29% African American, and 14% Hmong.


Anyone can be a mentor! Mentors work one-on-one in the classroom with students in grades 3-6. Mentors will help students during their reading, writing, and math structured times during the school day.  A mentor with experience in Spanish or Hmong is a welcoming benefit, but not necessary. By being a positive role model mentors can help students engage in their schoolwork and provide skills for success.


Time: Mentors come in anytime Monday - Friday between 8:25am and 2:35pm.

Tutoring CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio):

CLUES is a leading provider of social services for the Latino community in Minnesota. The Education Department of CLUES offers English as a Second Language (ESL) for adult immigrants and residents.  ESL classes cover basic English language skills that will better enable immigrants and residents to function in the community.  Volunteer instructors are expected to commit to three hours per week for ten weeks.

A Dakota County based organization responsible for a wealth of community assistance programs. 360 Communities can make use of most any skill brought to the table by a potential volunteer. Youth  Dakota City:

Are you looking for an opportunity to enrich your life through volunteering?  At Dakota City, you can: work with children, schools, educate visitors, learn new skills and meet great people!  Dakota City is a 1900 era agricultural village and museum.  Twenty-two buildings in the village, including an operational blacksmith shop, newspaper office, and photography studio, represent business and social center of a rural 1900 era community.  Through education, interpretation, experience and entertainment, Dakota City creates a living history environment to preserve, replicate, and portray the business and social center of the local rural agricultural community as people began moving from farms to towns.

Dakota Woodlands is a short-term housing facility for homeless women and children in Dakota County. Residents are provided with educational services and support, enabling them to address their issues related to homelessness. Service Learning opportunities include childcare, tutoring, facility upkeep, and managing the food shelf.

 

Time: Dakota Woodlands is open 24 hours a day, flexible shifts are available between 8 AM and 8 PM M-F

DARTS is a nonprofit organization that supports older adults and families with practical help at home, companionship, caregiver services, and transportation. Inver Hills service learners can connect with these elders by being a visitor, by helping with outdoor yard chores, by grocery shopping or running errands, and assisting in other ways.

The Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center is an environmental education and habitat restoration organization located in West St. Paul. The Eagan Resource Center is a food shelf and resource center. They depend entirely on community volunteers to stock and distribute food to the community.  Volunteers needed on many different levels: food shelf, marketing/PR, fundraising, and IT/Computer support.  Eagan Resource Center will work with service learners to tailor their service to their coursework.

YouthEarly Childhood Family Education

ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) is a MN State funded School District program
for families with children from birth to 5 (not yet in kindergarten). The mission of Early
Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families through the education and support
of all parents in order to help them provide the best possible environment for the healthy
growth and development of their children.


In District 833, ECFE sets the stage for parent involvement and children’s success in K-12
education and builds community by connecting parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Classes include early education experiences for children as well as parent education and
support for adults. Classes are taught by certified, licensed early childhood teachers and
parent educators. A variety of morning, afternoon, and evening classes, home visiting,
special events, field trips, drop-in play times and more are available.

Friends of the Mississippi:

Friends of the Mississippi River is a leading citizen organization working to protect and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities area. We believe the tremendous ecological, cultural, scenic and recreational values of the river must be carefully tended to ensure that they continue to be shared equally by all citizens and that they endure for future generations. We accomplish these goals through three interrelated programs.  Land Conservation, Watershed Protection, River Corridor Stewardship.


Each program engages citizens in a variety of activities, including hands-on volunteer events and educational activities.

YouthGarlough Elementary School

Garlough was formed in partnership with the Dodge Nature Center.  The curriculum is rich in science, technology and math concepts and skills which are necessary  for students to understand systems and interactions they encounter as they explore nature and the environment through event-based and project-based learning.  Science, technology, math, music, art, and other subjects come to life with hands-on learning that extend the classroom into the school’s fresh-air surroundings.
Students interested in volunteering with Garlough have endless options for collaboration.  Simply contact the school and let them know what you are interested in and they will work with you to create a valuable learning experience.

YouthKinship

Kids 'n Kinship is a private non-profit organization that matches children who have a need for an additional supportive relationship with carefully screened adult volunteers.  Once a match has been made, volunteers spend 1-4 hours per week with the child.  Typical activities might include picnicking, attending sporting events, hobbies, baking cookies or going to the movies.  Volunteers make a one-year commitment to the program.  These relationships often grow into life-long friendships. We serve children in the communities of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville and Rosemount.

Basic Needs Assistant
Position Overview: Work with diverse populations to assist Basic Needs staff members during regular hours in the food shelf. Assist with stocking shelves, repackaging bulk items, keeping food shelf space clean, conduct Intake interviews and assist with shopping and providing general customer service.

Youth Services
Position Overview: Our on-site Youth Center serves at risk youth from a diverse background and is centered on three foundations: 1. Education. 2. Life skills/Leadership mentoring. 3. Social/cultural enrichment. Working within this framework volunteers and interns will apply creative supervision and programming to best enhance program goals and provide the safest environment possible. Restorative justice applications are helpful but not necessary. *Intern may create and implement new programs as part of this practicum.
Time Commitment: The hours of our Youth Center during the fall and winter are 3:00pm-9:00pm and summer 11:00am to 7:00pm Monday-Friday.


GED Teacher
Position Overview: Interns will prepare native and non-native English speakers for the GED exam by leading classes or small groups in various subject areas: math, writing, reading, science and social studies. Teachers provide a comfortable and productive learning atmosphere while gaining experience with program planning and implementation. 
Time Commitment: A minimum commitment of three hours per week for 12 weeks is required. Hours are available Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m.  Training and resources will be provided.

YouthObama Elementary

Obama Service Learning is a Responsive Classroom school, bringing together a diverse student population through social and academic learning. Students are provided hands-on experiences and an opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge and skills through academic service learning projects and enrichment classes including Art, Reader's Theater, 
 
Cultural Explorations, and Science. Homeroom teachers provide students with a strong foundation in reading, writing, math, and social studies. Teachers integrate technology into classroom instruction through the use of two computer labs and classroom computers.
Volunteers are mainly needing for the Reading Corps program, work one on one or in small groups to help students master basic literacy skills.  There may also be some opportunities to work with students outside of reading corps.

SeniorsPresbyterian Homes of Inver Grove Heights:

Presbyterian Homes of Inver Grove Heights is a senior living community located on Cahill Avenue. The campus is 241 units of Town Homes (67), Senior Apartments (90), Assisted Living (66), and Memory Care (18) and is the only continuum in Inver Grove Heights. The community is decorated in a warm and welcoming northwoods decor and offers amenities such as a deli, general store, hair salon, fitness center, chapel, and restaurant style dining rooms.  The assisted living has home care staff available 24 hours a day and a full recreation program is available to all residents. The community is owned and operated by Presbyterian Homes and Services in Roseville, MN.

 

Time: Shifts are decided between volunteer and volunteer coordinator, several shifts are open.

Commitment: Minimum 15 hours

We work with families identified by Hennepin County as having multiple and severe barriers to employment, such as mental health concerns, physical disabilities or children with severe emotional or behavior disturbance.  Connections to Work assists families in addressing these barriers through strengths-based case management, individualized goal plan development and referrals to various community resources and services.

Adult reading to a childRead With Me pairs struggling readers in grades 1 - 3 with a tutor to offer direct support in reading and writing. Tutors are trained on how to support their student, and meet with the same student consistently over the semester.
