Youth180 Degree Resiliency:

This organization works with boys and girls ages 9 to 17 who are involved in the Ramsey County system. Clients are paired with mentors who meet once a week to work on positive relationship building, role modeling, and other various areas of expressed need.

 

Time: Shifts are decided between mentor and student.

Commitment: 6 month minimum (ideally 12 hours/month.)

Requirements: Background check, access to transportation.

African Development Center:

Through ongoing workshops, African Development Center helps immigrants and refugees plan, build and finance their businesses and offers home ownership and financial literacy workshops. They support clients to start new business and grow existing ones.

 

Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Weekdays

healthcareAmerican Red Cross:

American Red Cross service learners provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Typically, students play a role in supporting Red Cross blood donors, both as greeters and as canteen hosts at Red Cross sites and at bloodmobiles across the metro area.

 

Time: One-time events include a holiday function, a fund-raiser, or a mass training event.
Short term assignments vary from a few full days to several hours a month for a few months. These might entail updating a booklet or manual, installing or programming computers, Web site work, or teaching a skill to others.

Big Brothers Big Sisters:

 Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children ages 6 through 18 with mentors in professionally supported one on one relationships. With volunteer programs in communities across the country to help children reach their potential with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. Many other internship programs are available.


Time: Two hours a week.

Commitment: Two hours a week for as long as you are able.

Building Blocks Tutorial:

In collaboration with St. Paul Schools, Building Blocks Tutorial offers after-school tutoring to second and third grade students who are below grade level, in need of greater self-esteem, or who are not receiving homework support at home. Each tutor is paired with a student to meet with consistently throughout the term.

 

Time: Second grade tutors: T, Th 3:30-5:00 PM
Third grade tutors: W 3:30-5:00 PM

Commitment: 1 semester commitment (weekly over 12 weeks)

TutoringCLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio):

CLUES works with the Latino community in five core areas: mental health, chemical health, elder wellness, education, and employment. CLUES is an established organization with a wide variety of service learning opportunities.

Common Bond:

Common Bond is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing with onsite services in Minnesota. Common Bond housing includes 71 communities serving over 6,200 people living in family, senior, and special needs housing. Service Learning opportunities include tutoring, computer support, and adult education.


Time: Reading Corps: 30-60 minutes weekly reading one on one with a student
Study Buddies/Homework Center: 1-2 hours weekly supporting with homework
Citizenship Instructor: Help an adult prepare for the U.S. Citizenship Exam
Computer Instructors/Lab Assistance: Teach computer skills

Commitment: 1 hour per week.

Community Action Council:

A Dakota County based organization responsible for a wealth of community assistance programs. CAC can make use of most any skill brought to the table by a potential volunteer. Food shelves/drives, women's shelters, adult education, financial assistance, public health check-ups, and other programs are maintained year round by this agency. CAC also offers New American Services for immigrant populations.

Dakota Woodlands is a short-term housing facility for homeless women and children in Dakota County. Residents are provided with educational services and support, enabling them to address their issues related to homelessness. Service Learning opportunities include childcare, tutoring, facility upkeep, and managing the food shelf.

 

Time: Dakota Woodlands is open 24 hours a day, flexible shifts are available between 8 AM and 8 PM M-F

Commitment: There are no set amount of hours needed to work at Dakota Woodlands. You can volunteer once, once a month, or more frequently.

seniorsDARTS:Elderly women on a bus

DARTS is a local organization that provides home help and transportation services for Dakota County seniors and their families. Inver Hills service learners typically play a role as companions to senior residents in the Independent Living Program. They can also assist seniors in homemaking, outdoor chores, shopping, and transportation.

 

Time: Shifts are determined between the student and her/his senior. Visits can be scheduled during the week, in the evening, or on weekends.

Commitment: minimum 12 hours.

Eftin is an immigrant led non-profit agency that supports new immigrant and refugee families. Service learners are needed to play a role in their after school enrichment programs working primarily with the Somali population.

Extra Innings Learning Lab Tutoring and Mentoring Program:

Extra Innings provides educational support to elementary, middle, and high school youth in the Landfall Community.  Students need help in basic math, reading, study skills, and ESL.

Family Resource Center at Calvary Church:

Family Resource Center is a food shelf and educational resource center. They depend heavily on community volunteers and service learning students to support students during the after school tutoring program. Students also assist in maintaining the food shelf, the clothes closet, book drives, and birthday baskets.

Minnesota Valley Humane Society:

An animal shelter dedicated to educating the community in desirable animal treatment and training as well as finding reliable homes for orphaned pets. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose from a variety of roles from "Cat Cuddler," and "Adoption Counselor," to "Obedience Assistant" or "Animal Foster Caregiver." MVHS thrives on the support of the communities it benefits and the volunteers that make such support possible.

 

Time: Day, Afternoon, Evening, and Weekend shifts available

Commitment: At least two shifts per month, for six months.

Somali Education Center is a year-round educational program that serves K-12 immigrant students and adult ESL students. SEC provides after school tutoring, weekend and summer enrichment programs, and workshops aimed to prevent drug use and crime among Somali youth.

Homework Centers are spaces at the library where students drop in and work on their homework with the support of volunteer mentors. Service learners assist students with homework and study skills, create a welcoming atmosphere, and serve as positive role models.

Adult reading to a childRead With Me pairs struggling readers in grades 1 - 3 with a tutor to offer direct support in reading and writing. Tutors are trained on how to support their student, and meet with the same student consistently over the semester.

The Multicultural Achievers connects teens with mentors in the community to explore a variety of higher educational opportunities, internships and specific fields of interests. Focus is on coaching teens to set educational goals. Service learners are requested to support in seminars for middle school and high school students related to college application process.
