This organization works with boys and girls ages 9 to 17 who are involved in the Ramsey County system. Clients are paired with mentors who meet once a week to work on positive relationship building, role modeling, and other various areas of expressed need.

 

Time: Shifts are decided between mentor and student.

Commitment: 6 month minimum (ideally 12 hours/month.)

healthcareAmerican Red Cross:

American Red Cross service learners provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Typically, students play a role in supporting Red Cross blood donors, both as greeters and as canteen hosts at Red Cross sites and at bloodmobiles across the metro area.

 

Time: One-time events include a holiday function, a fund-raiser, or a mass training event.
Short term assignments vary from a few full days to several hours a month for a few months. These might entail updating a booklet or manual, installing or programming computers, Web site work, or teaching a skill to others.

AMIE

The AMIE program matches professional mentors with individuals (mentees) who need assistance retaining employment and advancing their careers.  The vision of the AMIE program is to match mentees with role models who will have a positive influence on their work life and financial self-sufficiency.

 

Time: Shifts are decided between mentor and mentee, weekly contact is required and can be by phone or e-mail, but face to face meetings are encouraged once monthly.  Mentors and mentees are required to attend a monthly professional networking event while in the program (this can be used as the weekly required meeting).

Commitment: 6 month commitment

Requirements: Short application, reference and background check and interview.  Mentors must attend a short orientation.

Big Brothers Big Sisters:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS) matches young people with adult, volunteer mentors to build long-term, one-to-one relationships. Volunteer mentors provide friendship, emotional support and hope to young people.


Time: One or more hours per week, varies by volunteer.

Commitment: One full calendar year.

Building Blocks Tutorial:

In collaboration with St. Paul Schools, Building Blocks Tutorial offers after-school tutoring to second and third grade students who are below grade level, in need of greater self-esteem, or who are not receiving homework support at home. Each tutor is paired with a student to meet with consistently throughout the term.

Tutoring Cherokee Heights Elementary Mentoring Program:

At Cherokee we work to nurture and challenge each student intellectually, emotionally, and physically in our Pre K– 6th grade programs. Cherokee Heights is a highly diverse elementary with 48% Hispanic, 29% African American, and 14% Hmong.


Anyone can be a mentor! Mentors work one-on-one in the classroom with students in grades 3 – 6. Mentors will help students during their reading, writing, and math structured times during the school day.  A mentor with experience in Spanish or Hmong is a welcoming benefit, but not necessary. By being a positive role model mentors can help students engage in their schoolwork and provide skills for success.


Time: Mentors come in anytime Monday – Friday between 8:25am and 2:35pm.

TutoringCLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio):

CLUES is a leading provider of social services for the Latino community in Minnesota. The Education Department of CLUES offers English as a Second Language (ESL) for adult immigrants and residents.  ESL classes cover basic English language skills that will better enable immigrants and residents to function in the community.  Volunteer instructors are expected to commit to three hours per week for ten weeks.

Common Bond:

Common Bond is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing with onsite services in Minnesota. Common Bond housing includes 71 communities serving over 6,200 people living in family, senior, and special needs housing. Service Learning opportunities include tutoring, computer support, and adult education.

Community Action Council:

A Dakota County based organization responsible for a wealth of community assistance programs. CAC can make use of most any skill brought to the table by a potential volunteer. Food shelves/drives, women's shelters, adult education, financial assistance, public health check-ups, and other programs are maintained year round by this agency. CAC also offers New American Services for immigrant populations.

Youth Dakota City:

Are you looking for an opportunity to enrich your life through volunteering?  At Dakota City, you can: work with children, schools, educate visitors, learn new skills and meet great people!  Dakota City is a 1900 era agricultural village and museum.  Twenty-two buildings in the village, including an operational blacksmith shop, newspaper office, and photography studio, represent business and social center of a rural 1900 era community.  Through education, interpretation, experience and entertainment, Dakota City creates a living history environment to preserve, replicate, and portray the business and social center of the local rural agricultural community as people began moving from farms to towns.

Dakota Woodlands is a short-term housing facility for homeless women and children in Dakota County. Residents are provided with educational services and support, enabling them to address their issues related to homelessness. Service Learning opportunities include childcare, tutoring, facility upkeep, and managing the food shelf.

 

Time: Dakota Woodlands is open 24 hours a day, flexible shifts are available between 8 AM and 8 PM M-F

Commitment: There are no set amount of hours needed to work at Dakota Woodlands. You can volunteer once, once a month, or more frequently.

seniorsDARTS:Elderly women on a bus

DARTS is a nonprofit organization that supports older adults and families with practical help at home, companionship, caregiver services, and transportation. Inver Hills service learners can connect with these elders by being a visitor, by helping with outdoor yard chores, by grocery shopping or running errands, and assisting in other ways.

 

Time: Flexible day-time hours.

Commitment: Minimum of 12 hours.

Extra Innings provides educational support to elementary, middle, and high school youth in the Landfall Community.  Students need help in basic math, reading, study skills, and ESL.

Family Means strengthens communities by helping families learn, work and nurture healthy relationships. Family Means offers family counseling and mental health services, school programs, Landfall youth development initiative, consumer credit counseling, caregiver support and an employee assistance program. Service learners are needed for caregiver support and youth initiatives.

TutoringGear Up:

Gear Up is a federally funded program that works in collaboration with, teachers, community partners, students and families, and St. Olaf College to annually assist 850 students from the the class of 2011 at Humboldt Secondary School and Harding Senior High School in St. Paul, Minnesota.


Time: After school, Humboldt offers Homework Help on Thursdays, where it would be great to have 2-3 tutors working with students. Homework Help runs from 2-4. Students that tutor during this program, mainly help students one-on-one with their homework. They can float around in the library asking who needs help with what and so on

Minnesota Valley Humane Society:

An animal shelter dedicated to educating the community in desirable animal treatment and training as well as finding reliable homes for orphaned pets. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose from a variety of roles from "Cat Cuddler," and "Adoption Counselor," to "Obedience Assistant" or "Animal Foster Caregiver." MVHS thrives on the support of the communities it benefits and the volunteers that make such support possible.

Position Overview: Our ESL classes focus on a learner-centered model which incorporates Basic English language instruction with American cultural lessons and daily survival skills. Co-teachers work with adult immigrants and refugees from all over the world in large and small classroom settings, as well as small group and one-on-one, to provide a comfortable learning atmosphere and aid learners in the acquisition of the skills they need to live, work and support their families in the United States
Time Commitment: A minimum commitment of 3 hours per week for 12 weeks is required. Positions are available at the Wellstone Center

Basic Needs Assistant
Position Overview: Work with diverse populations to assist Basic Needs staff members during regular hours in the food shelf. Assist with stocking shelves, repackaging bulk items, keeping food shelf space clean, conduct Intake interviews and assist with shopping and providing general customer service.
Time Commitment: Flexible shifts M-F 8:30-4:30 PM

 

Youth Services
Position Overview: Our on-site Youth Center serves at risk youth from a diverse background and is centered on three foundations: 1. Education. 2. Life skills/Leadership mentoring. 3. Social/cultural enrichment. Working within this framework volunteers and interns will apply creative supervision and programming to best enhance program goals and provide the safest environment possible. Restorative justice applications are helpful but not necessary. *Intern may create and implement new programs as part of this practicum.
Time Commitment: The hours of our Youth Center during the fall and winter are 3:00pm-9:00pm and summer 11:00am to 7:00pm Monday-Friday.


GED Teacher
Position Overview: Interns will prepare native and non-native English speakers for the GED exam by leading classes or small groups in various subject areas: math, writing, reading, science and social studies. Teachers provide a comfortable and productive learning atmosphere while gaining experience with program planning and implementation. 
Time Commitment: A minimum commitment of three hours per week for 12 weeks is required. Hours are available Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m.  Training and resources will be provided.

SeniorsPresbyterian Homes of Inver Grove Heights:

Presbyterian Homes of Inver Grove Heights is a senior living community located on Cahill Avenue. The campus is 241 units of Town Homes (67), Senior Apartments (90), Assisted Living (66), and Memory Care (18) and is the only continuum in Inver Grove Heights. The community is decorated in a warm and welcoming northwoods décor and offers amenities such as a deli, general store, hair salon, fitness center, chapel, and restaurant style dining rooms.  The assisted living has home care staff available 24 hours a day and a full recreation program is available to all residents. The community is owned and operated by Presbyterian Homes and Services in Roseville, MN.
