Urban Education students work as tutors in local elementary, middle, and high schools. In class, they learn the characteristics of urban schools to prepare for their own teaching in diverse settings. Their service learning provides them a real foundation of urban teaching and learning.
Humanities students participated in an Oral Histories project with local World War II Veterans. Students gained extensive knowledge about interviewing, editing, script writing, and most importantly, American history from primary sources. The veterans and their families also benefitted: this helped to validate their service and also provided a keepsake for them and their families.

-Education student at Hilltop Elementary
I was able to incorporate things I've learned in the classroom setting. For example, professional boundaries, therapeutic communication, and scope of practice. I really enjoyed our time together and learned a lot in the process.

-Psychology student at Common Bond
It was helpful in understanding the way children learn. It was also eye opening to see how much some communities and children in these communities are impacted, due to poverty and other circumstances. I think everyone should do some kind of service learning at some point in their life.
