"Required" Writing Center Appointments
The Writing Center is eager to work with students of all disciplines and academic abilities. Additionally, we really appreciate and strongly encourage faculty to recommend the Writing Center to students. Some faculty require their students to visit the Writing Center; however, we cannot accommodate entire classes if the students only have a limited amount of time (1-2 weeks) to schedule their visits. Moreover, we find that required visits, particularly for higher level classes, are rarely productive. Therefore, for both andragogical and staffing reasons, the Writing Center recommends that faculty allow students to use Smarthinking as an alternative to visiting the Writing Center and have students stagger or spread their required visits throughout the semester because we are simply not staffed for large groups of students. There are some exceptions:
- Faculty teaching developmental courses may wish to have portions of their classes visit the Writing Center. In this case, it is imperative that the instructor contact the Writing Center staff to make arrangements.
Editing and "Signing off"
Writing Center tutors do not edit student work. Likewise, tutors do not work line-by-line with students to show them every error in their paper. Instead, we work with students collaboratively to improve their writing skills. For this reason, tutors do not “sign off” on papers or write on papers in order to make corrections. Click here for further information: Writing Center procedures.
Writing Center staff are happy to visit your classes to explain our services. Visits
are usually around ten minutes. We discuss:
1. What to expect in a tutoring session
2. The range of services we can offer students
3. How to make appointments
We can also answer any questions students or faculty might have. To schedule an appointment, email us at WritingCenter@inverhills.edu
The Writing Center will not assist students with assignments that are labeled “exam” or “test” without approval from the instructor. We understand that you have a lot of other things to think about, so we will contact you for permission.
For your syllabi
Faculty are welcome to use the following in syllabi.
The Writing Center
The Writing Center is located in the Learning Center (2nd floor, Library Bldg.). It is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00-6:00 and Friday 9:00-4:00. The Center has a mix of staff, peer, and faculty tutors available to assist with writing. This could range from helping to generate ideas to grammar and citation questions. Students can schedule an appointment or walk in. Due to high demand, there may not always be an immediate walk-in appointment available. Appointments can be made over the phone or in the Center. Online services are also available. Visit the website for more information: www.inverhills.edu/StudentResources/WritingCenter/index.aspx
