A.S., Nursing
Purpose:
- To prepare associate degree nurses who are capable of administering safe, patient-centered, holistic care in beginning level positions in nursing practice.
- To prepare graduates who are qualified to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).
- To provide opportunity for nursing students to recognize their commitment to personal and professional development.
- To facilitate career mobility of LPNs and Paramedics toward the Associate Degree in Nursing.
- To maintain an innovative nursing curriculum.
- To promote and prepare students for continued formal professional nursing education.
- To prepare graduates who are culturally competent.
Program Information:
Three unique nursing curricular tracks are offered, leading to the Associate in Science Degree (A.D.) in Nursing.
The Traditional Track requires completion of the entire four semester nursing course sequence and liberal arts requirements.
The LPN Mobility and Paramedic Mobility are offered to licensed practical nurses or qualified paramedics, and requires completion of a two and one-half semester nursing course sequence and completion of the liberal arts requirements. Completion time is determined by the number of liberal arts requirements met before entering the program and generally ranges from two to four semesters.
Clinical learning experiences are provided at hospitals and community health care facilities within St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs.
The Nursing Program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission - 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 500, Atlanta, Georgia 30326 Phone: 404.975.5000).
Mission: The Inver Hills Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program is committed to continuously improving student understanding and capabilities that help students become critical thinkers, culturally competent, holistic caregivers, teachers, advocates, interdisciplinary collaborators, leaders/managers and lifelong learners in a variety of community settings. The Inver Hills Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program values and supports diversity and is committed to the recruitment and retention of diverse students.
Educational Mobility: Graduates of the Inver Hills Community College Associate Degree Nursing Programsatisfy many of the lower-division, liberal arts requirements needed to earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Students planning to enter baccalaureate nursing programs following completion of the A.D. in Nursing are advised to see a counselor for specific transfer advice. The Inver Hills Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program has a statewide articulation agreement with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) where there is a seamless transfer of credits to any college within the system toward a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
Application Requirements: Once accepted, students are required to submit the Health Immunization Record and to complete and pass a criminal background study required by the State of Minnesota. Background clearance must be obtained to participate in the Nursing Program. A current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card is also required to be maintained throughout the Nursing Program.
Admission Requirements: Beginning with the applications for the 2012-2013 academic year, the nursing program admission requirements have been changed. The fact sheet is provided on the IHCC Nursing webpage for the nursing program and will be available in the Counseling department, the Nursing Department and from Student Services.

NLN Pre-admission Exam (PAX RN) Requirement: Completion of the PAX RN exam prior to the application deadline with a minimum composite score of 110. Applicants can take the exam two times within a calendar year as long as the second exam is taken at least two months after the first exam. Applicants needing to take the exam can do so at Inver Hills. The cost of the exam is approx. 45 dollars. To take the exam, register online at www.nlnonlinetesting.org .

Certificate, Nursing Assistant
Purpose: Provides training required for basic entry into health care as a nursing assistant or home health aide, including 24 hours of supervised clinical experience in a long-term care facility. Students are prepared to take the state registry exam for certification unpon completion of the course. This course meets the NA requirement for admission to the Inver Hills Community College Nursing Program
