The fast-growth biomedical technology industry has created a need for skilled workers who are knowledgeable about the industry, technology competent, as well as proficient in oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Medical device manufacturing is one of the fastest growing and most successful industries in the Twin Cities according to the state's Department of Economic Security. Medical devices include implantable pacemakers, artificial heart valves, drug transfusion pumps, and similar equipment. A new degree program offered cooperatively with Anoka-Ramsey Community College provides required course work at Inver Hills.
The program is designed to meet entry-level employment needs as well as provide promotional opportunities in the medical device field. Program graduates work in a variety of positions depending on their backgrounds and interests. Some become members of teams that develop or manufacture devices like implantable cardiac pacemakers, artificial heart valves, or in-the-ear hearing aids. Others may be involved in clinical research to study the effectiveness and safety of such devices.
