PTK FAQs:

(1) WHY DID YOU RECEIVE A NOTICE TO JOIN PHI THETA KAPPA?

(2) WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?

(3) DO YOU HAVE TO BE ACTIVE?

(4) CAN YOU JOIN ANYTIME?

(5) IS THIS WORTH IT? IS THIS JUST A RIP-OFF?

(1) WHY DID YOU RECEIVE A NOTICE TO JOIN PHI THETA KAPPA?
You may have already been asked to join once or twice:  Inver Hills College records show you are eligible.  You were sent an invitation that included a key code individualized to you, alone, so you could use it and a credit card to join online.

(2) WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?  There are three good reasons:
 (a) It makes a great bullet point on your resume.  Whether or not a future transfer college reviewer or a job interviewer likes you, at least he or she will think you are smart if PTK membership is on your resume.  I have my honor society membership on my resume, and all these years I’ve been very happy that I did.

(b) Joining makes transfer scholarships automatically available to you from over a dozen Minnesota colleges and universities, several dozen in the Midwest, and over 700 in the U.S.  These automatic transfer scholarships—just for membership—range from $300 to $10,000 or more.  I have a couple of friends who used to be at Inver who tell me they wish they had joined PTK when they had the chance: one of them would have qualified for $5000 a year just by being a member, and the other $3000 a year at their transfer colleges.  You can check at www.ptk.org/scholarships (and click on the right on “Transfer Scholarships”).

(c) Joining also goes permanently on your transcript. You may wear PTK regalia (sash, tassel, et al.) at graduation. And once you’ve paid the initial membership fee and continue to qualify for membership (maintaining a GPA of 3.25) until you leave IHCC, you will be a member at no cost for life.

(3) DO YOU HAVE TO BE ACTIVE?  The answer is “no.”  Being a member of the honor society is simply an honor that you deserve.  About 5-10% of members choose to be active, which adds more bullet points to their resumes and also is fun.  We meet every Wednesday, 3-4:15 pm, in HH-313 this semester, and in fall 2014 we’ll meet every Wed. at 2 pm.  We are one of the top chapters in the four-state region.  Each year, we engage in two major projects—a research project leading to action, and a service project.  And we sponsor a number of other events and small projects.  But you do NOT have to be active.  We simply want you to join because membership will help you, and you deserve it.

(4) CAN YOU JOIN ANYTIME?  The answer is “no.”  If your overall GPA goes below 3.25, you may not join.  And you also must be a student at IHCC (or another two-year college). Once you leave the two-year college system, you may not join.

(5) IS THIS WORTH IT? IS THIS JUST A RIP-OFF?  There are, in fact, some “honor societies” that are mainly just a profit-based, money-making scheme.  However, PTK is the largest college honor society in the United States and one of the oldest, and it is a nonprofit organization providing millions of dollars in scholarships every year.  Ask anyone about us in the main administration offices in the LA building.  In addition, our own IHCC chapter receives $10 of each new-member fee for a variety of projects and needs of the chapter in serving our campus and community.  One of our service projects, for example, was to start the IHCC system of recyclable green cups, water bottles, and water machines around campus.  Another was an online system used at Inver and elsewhere to determine if online courses are right for you (see www.breatheptk.org ), and many others.  Visit the national site at www.ptk.org or our own chapter’s site to see just how committed PTK is nationally and locally to scholarship, service, leadership, and fellowship.
