Community

The importance of community in the college experience cannot be overstated. Merriam-Webster defines community as “a unified body of individuals: such as people with common interests living in a particular area.”

Community

For Inver Hills Community College, that particular area encompasses the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs starting with our host city, Inver Grove Heights. From there, our college community expands outward to include greater Minnesota, a number of neighboring states and even overseas to include our international students.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, community colleges fill an essential role in delivering vital postsecondary educational opportunities in the United States. As a premier community college with nationally recognized achievements, Inver Hills provides an exceptional variety of academic and career-building options to our students, including:

  • Open access to pertinent, affordable postsecondary education with small class sizes, more one-on-one interactions with instructors and advisors, and a supportive, understanding and welcoming environment
  • Transfer preparation to a four-year college or university, especially via our Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree and Transfer Pathways
  • Workforce development and skills training through the Minnesota Training Connection
  • Noncredit developmental education classes as well as civic-enrichment offerings and a wide range of cultural activities, including art, theatre and music events

Community involvement for our college means creating and growing relationships with business and industry, relationships that keep our programs relevant and provide internships while developing pipelines that create and fund scholarships and encourage equipment donations. Those relationships benefit from our alumni network, which is focused on improving ways for our graduates to share their knowledge and success by helping current students follow in their footsteps.

Community also means being part of the Minnesota State system that offers Minnesotans access to the resources of seven universities and 30 colleges with 54 campuses across the state.

Here are just some of the reasons Inver Hills has community in its name:

Adult Learner Institute

Adult learners are an important part of every college's student population, and more adults will be coming to college to get started, finish their degrees, change careers and more. Adults have different needs and expectations than “traditional” students who are enrolling right after high school. Come learn from experts and each other on how to best serve adult learners using best practices.

Inver Hills-Metro State Community Garden & Orchard

Maintained by students, faculty, staff and community members, the Community Garden generates produce for local community food shelves. Individual students and community members grow produce for personal use in reserved plots.
