Peer tutors are a students who have excelled in the courses they tutor. Tutors are chosen for their academic and interpersonal skills. They are trained as tutors. Their instructors have recommended them for consideration as tutors.
Peer tutoring is located in the Learning Center on the second floor of the Library building. Tutoring sessions are typically available Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Evening hours may be available on request. All peer tutoring availability is based on the peer tutors’ available hours.
Tutoring helps you benefit from classroom instruction and cannot replace your attendance in class; tutors help you understand course material that may be giving you difficulties.
Contact the peer tutoring coordinator at 651-450-3693 if you will be late for your appointment or if you need to cancel your appointment; unless notified, your tutor will wait only 15 minutes past your scheduled meeting time; missing two sessions without calling or canceling your appointment repeatedly will cause your tutoring sessions to be discontinued.
You and your tutor can then concentrate on quiz or test topics, making sure you are fully prepared; tutors cannot help you with a take-home quiz or test.
Tutors will have a much easier time helping you when you first start having difficulties with your coursework. If you get too far behind, you may not be able to catch up. If you are thinking about dropping a course, notify your tutor or speak with the peer tutoring coordinator; they may still be able to help you.
Working with a tutor does not guarantee a higher grade. Tutoring is designed to help you improve your study skills. A peer tutor can only help you help yourself. Tutoring is not a replacement for your own motivation to learn.
