The Writing Center

The Learning Center will be closed for in-person hours/services from 1/18 - 2/4.

Think. Learn. Write.

Welcome! The Writing Center provides students with individual tutoring in every phase of the writing process, such as

  • generating ideas
  • outlining
  • thesis statements
  • drafting
  • organizing a paper
  • finals edits
  • grammar questions
  • documenting sources

While we won't edit for you, we will show you how to edit for yourself.

The Writing Center can help with writing assignments in all subjects, as well as:

  • creating a resume or cover letter
  • scholarship essays
  • personal statements for college admissions

Most importantly, though, we at the Writing Center are committed to helping you become the best thinker, learner, and writer you can possibly be.

The Writing Center is staffed by lab assistants who are experienced writers and teachers of writing. Keith Richter, English faculty member, is the Writing Center Coordinator. Visit Writing Center Staff to learn more about their backgrounds and beliefs.

Appointment Guidelines

You can get assistance from the Writing Center through a scheduled appointment or a walk-in conference. At busy times of the semester, there may not be walk-in sessions available with professional tutors. However, the Writing Center has part-time peer tutors who do walk-in tutoring. You can make an appointment with a tutor and check on the availability of the peer tutors by clicking the "Make an Appointment" button.

Below are some guidelines to help make your visits to the Writing Center more effective.

  • Please be on time! We want to spend as much time as possible talking with you and working on your writing. If you have to cancel an appointment, please do so 1 hour before the start of the appointment.
  • Bring your ideas, prewriting, and drafts. Bring your text(s). Bring your assignment sheet with the requirements for the assignment. This helps your tutor help you!
  • Expect to take an active role in the tutoring conference; we'll ask you a lot of questions and want to talk about what you are writing.
  • The conference will be 25 minutes long or 55 minutes if you have booked two appointments in a row.
  • Expect to address the development and organization of the content before addressing grammar and mechanics.
  • Do not expect that every problem in a paper will be addressed. Tutors will not edit your paper for you. They will focus on patterns of errors that you can realistically learn to correct in the time available.

We can't wait to see you in the Writing Center!
