Volunteering

What is Volunteering?

Volunteering allows individuals to work with community organizations in order to give back to the community and gain experience. Volunteer positions differ are different than unpaid internships in the following ways:

  • Requires less time commitment
  • May focus on a specific task or project
  • The work benefits the organization or people served

Benefits of Volunteering

  • Gain experience
  • Learn about an organization
  • Meet new people
  • Be engaged in the community
  • Explore career interests

Identifying a Good Volunteer Site

When thinking of a good volunteer site there are four important things to keep in mind:

  • Location
  • Career Interests
  • Mission of the Organization
  • What would you be doing?

If the volunteer site isn’t near your current home then it will take extra effort to get there.

If the volunteer site is related to your career interests, it could provide you with a good glimpse into the field and help you decide if you are interested in pursuing that field.

If the mission of the volunteer site is in line with your interests, it is more likely to be good fit.

If the tasks that you are doing are engaging and meaningful, it will be a better volunteer experience.

When Should I Volunteer?

As soon as possible! Volunteering can work with even the busiest of schedules and the more quality experiences gained, the stronger the resume. Volunteering can be a lifelong passion and doesn’t need to end once you are done with school.

Where can I find Volunteer Sites?

If you are interested in a particular company go to their website and see if they have any volunteer positions. Visit the Center for Experiential Learning and we can help connect you to resources!
