About the Safety & Security Department

The Safety & Security Department enforces campus policies and the student code of conduct; and through mutual aid, assists with enforcement of local, state and federal laws. For additional security services, Public Safety also contracts with the local police department.

Non-Emergency Contacts

Campus Supervisor: 651-450-3343 or 3348

Emergency notification systems

The Inver Hills campus has two main emergency notification systems: Star Alert and Alertus. These emergency communication systems may be used in conjunction with one another or may be used separately depending on the situation.

StarAlert

When you register, you are automatically signed up for StarAlert, our emergency notification system. Get time-sensitive emergency notifications from campus leaders and the Safety & Security Department via phone calls, texts and/or emails.

Alertus

The Alertus mass notification system has been deployed to enhance our ability to notify the campus community of emergencies. The system includes wall beacons, campus computer notifications, and an app you can download. Learn more about Alertus.

Safety & Security Emergency Management Plan

This Safety & Security Emergency Management Plan ensures that college administration, on the Inver Hills and Dakota County Technical College campuses, is prepared to deal with natural disasters such as floods and fires, technological accidents, and biological and man-made emergencies.

This plan details the processes and procedures for the mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery processes in response to emergency conditions that may occur at either campus location. These standard procedures are designed to ensure maximum protection of students, staff, and property in the event of an emergency; and to ensure the preservation of organizational communications during emergency conditions.

Parking

Parking is available on campus for students, staff members and visitors. You do not need a special permit. You may park in any parking space not marked as reserved. Well-defined parking regulations are enforced by the Department of Public Safety and the by the Inver Grove Heights Police Department. Reserved parking is available in the Liberal Arts and Fine Arts Parking lot. To obtain a permit contact the College's Administration Department on the 2nd floor of the Liberal Arts Building. Individuals with State issued handicapped parking certificates may park in the Fine Arts, College Center or South Parking lots.

Minnesota Law requires public colleges to pay a portion, or in some cases all of the cost associated with construction, maintenance and operation of parking facilities. Inver Hills keeps this fee at the minimum required to cover parking-related cost by using a credit-based fee as opposed to more costly methods like permits, meters, hourly lots, etc.

Parking fees may be waived by completing a Parking User Fee Exemption Request form available from the Business Office, 2nd floor of the College Center Building. To qualify for the exemption, the student or staff member must:

  • Reside in an area neighborhood and don’t drive to campus
  • Participate in a carpool program
  • Ride the bus to campus

Policies

Students and staff should be familiar with all college policies. The following policies specifically relate to Public Safety on campus.

  • Student Code of Conduct
  • Alcohol Beverages and Controlled Substances Policy
  • Smoking and Tobacco Policy
  • Visitors and Animals on Campus
  • Firearms Policy
  • Parking Procedure
  • Sexual Violence Policy
  • Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Policy

Report a Crime

Steps for reporting a crime:

  1. Call 911 in an emergency or if the crime is in progress. An emergency involves danger to a person's safety or property.
    1. If the crime is in progress, call 911 (dial 9-911 from on-campus phones).
    2. If the crime has already occurred and an officer is needed to respond, call 911 or 651-322-2323 to report it to the Dakota Communication Center.
  2. Call Public Safety at 651-450-3711. Another option is to go to the Safety and Security Department to report the inappropriate conduct and/or criminal activity in person. Public Safety cannot hold reports of crime in confidence.

To obtain a copy of a report if reported to the Police Department:

Call the Inver Grove Heights Police Department at 651-450-2525 or in person at:
8150 Barbara Avenue, Inver Grove Heights MN 55077

To obtain a copy of a report if reported to Campus Public Safety:

Email your request to security@inverhills.edu. It may take up to 5 business days to complete your request.
