Soup and Substance

Whether you are taking a community-based learning class or are just interested in learning more about social justice, Soup and Substance is a monthly event where you can learn how to make a difference. Each month, we will focus on a different topic related to civic engagement and leadership. A free (vegetarian) soup lunch will be provided.

Danger of a Single Story

In her TED talk, novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie reflects on how she found her authentic cultural voice – and warns that if we carry only a single story about another person or group, we risk a critical misunderstanding. During this session we will watch her TED talk and engage in a focused conversation about the video and the stories you carry and encounter too.

“Households don’t have much control over fixed monthly expenses like the mortgage or rent or utility bills. When things get tight, one of the first budget items cut is food. Individuals and families turn to food shelves for help making it through the month (hungersolutions.org).” What are solutions to food insecurity in our community and what can you do to help?
