Volunteering is a voluntary act of an individual or group freely giving time and labor for community service. Volunteer positions are different than unpaid internships in the following ways:
When thinking of a good volunteer site there are four important things to keep in mind:
If the volunteer site isn’t near your current home then it will take extra effort to get there.
If the volunteer site is related to your career interests, it could provide you with a good glimpse into the field and help you decide if you are interested in pursuing that field.
If the mission of the volunteer site is in line with your interests, it is more likely to be good fit.
If the tasks that you are doing are engaging and meaningful, it will be a better volunteer experience.
As soon as possible! Volunteering can work with even the busiest of schedules and the more quality experiences gained, the stronger the resume. Volunteering can be a lifelong passion and doesn’t need to end once you are done with school.
