What is Inver Prep?
Inver Prep is a new Inver Hills Community College program that takes a different approach to preparing high school students for college. Inver Prep helps high school students in the "academic middle" prepare for college.
Who is eligible?
To qualify, students must:
- Place in the 30th-70th percentile in school.
- Have ACCUPLACER test scores between 35-62 on reading test. (Math scores will be provided to the high school based on the Math class the high school offers).
When do students participate?
Students who participate in the Language Arts path of the Inver Prep program are identified and tested during 9th grade and join the program in 10th grade. Students who participate in the Math path of the Inver Prep program are identified and tested during 10th grade and join the program in 11th grade.
Where does this program take place?
Students stay in their own high schools to participate in the program and visit Inver Hills Community College about twice a year for special activities.
How does this fit with students’ high school curriculum?
Language Arts Path
The 10th grade curriculum aligns three Inver Hills college preparatory courses with the English curriculum at the high school. Students who are taking Inver Prep courses will also meet the high school requirement for English.
The 11th grade curriculum aligns an Inver Hills Community College preparatory courses with the Math curriculum at the high school. Students who are taking Inver Prep courses will also meet the high school requirement for Math.
Who will be teaching the courses – a high school teacher or a college instructor?
The short answer is both, but mainly the high school teacher. The Inver Prep program establishes a mentoring system between the college instructor and the high school teacher. The high school teacher may have to put in some additional time initially to learn the new curriculum and to attend professional workshops during the summer, but the program is also designed so the college instructor is there to help and support the high school teacher.
